A warm, calm evening helped produce some good times including PBs for Mike and Ian

It was good to see that the 25 or so people out were spread reasonably evenly between the three rides.  Not the best weather today although it wasn't cold.  The downside was that it was cloudy with a strong south wind.  On teletext in the evening found out that a sonic boom caused the enormous bang that occurred whilst we were at the cafe at Buntingford.  At the time we were pretty certain that it wasn't thunder!

The dynamic duo Brian(50x15) and Tony(49x15) were back for more.

Lots out today, probably inspired by the good weather.  A bunch of nine set out in the morning to ride the Century ride (the HW 160 Audax in preparation for next week).  Another bunch just short of twenty made their own problems at Emily's by creating the queue that caused all the holdups.  With everyone out and about in the morning, there were only two out in the afternoon.

Brian and Tony were at the track again. Brian won a prime.

Three Wheelers took part, Phil, Steve & Merv.  Phil put in a phenomenal time of 22:19.  Steve's time of 23:50 was one of his better ones and Merv's time of 25:25 would have won his age group except that some 82 year old bettered his time by two seconds.

Within this event was incorporated the HW Garrett Cup (because we don't organise our own 25).  Tony turned on the style and romped home in 1:00:30.  He was followed in by Brian (1:02:13) doing his first 25 for donkeys, an unfit and not race ready Barry (1:04:56) and Peter who finally managed to finish before the timekeeper went home (1:07:28).

Tony is just outside the hour but manages a convincing win.

Phil Y strikes back with a win on an evening that threatened by rain.

After the 30TT today, three riders set out from Tempsford for Grafham Water.  Should have been four but one rider (nameless) neglected to check his front tyre.  Had he done so he would have had plenty of time to rectify the puncture.  As the remaining riders set off at gone 10:00, it seemed stupid to fix it and hold them up further.  So (nameless) person drove off to Arkeley where he met up with about a dozen of the easies for a chance to bask in the sun.  Meanwhile about half a dozen took part in the fastie.

Two HW members took part, Peter & Merv.  Peter's time was 1:17:23, about half a minute down on his PB whilst Merv did 1:22:04.  Much of the conversation afterwards was about just exactly which direction the wind was coming from.  General consensus seemed to be that the wind should have made the return slightly easier although it was difficult to be sure during the Time Trial.

Brian Evans and Richard Clark raced in the Victoria CC 2up on a 10.2 mile course near Newport.
There was a strong headwind on the outward leg so they decided to use most of their energy there. It allowed them to post approximately even splits and they finished in 24:28 which was quick enough for them to finish 2nd.

Most took part in the easy pacer.  Some on the fast.  And those on the medium noted that at least all the riders in their group wore club colours.  The fine spring morning was good for cycling and most got home before the rains came. 

With fifteen of us in France it would have been easy to assume that there would not be many out on the club runs.  Wrong.  Over twentyfive took to the roads over the three rides.

On Sunday 19th May Nick C took part in the Ashwell CC road race. This was 4½ laps of a 56 mile course in Bedfordshire, just off the A1. Nick finished 37th out of 60 starters which, to date, is his worst result. However, a few weeks ago he raced on the same circuit and got dropped. This time he stayed near the back of the pack and finished with plenty of energy left!

Brian victorious in the scratch race - his first win in Wheelers' colours - as he and Tony continue to enjoy themselves.

On the 16th May Nick C rode the 2nd race of the Dunton summer circuit series and came 15th. This result has moved him into 11th place on the leader board out of 41 riders.
Nick's next race in the series is on Thursday 30th May. He says anyone who would like to have a go at road racing should come along. " It's easy going and very enjoyable. Starts at 19.00hrs at the Ford test track at Dunton (A127) ".
