Wheelers' Road Race - Coleman solos to victory

The break stayed away in the Wheelers' "Last Chance Points Grabber" road race on the Whitwell circuit on Sunday 30th September.
With two laps to go, a group of 7, mostly working together, extended their lead to 1½ minutes over a depleted chasing squad and almost 3 minutes over the peloton. The lead group consisted of Lubomir Belak (Welwyn Wheelers), Douglas Coleman and John Peters (CC Luton), Tim Carter (Virgin Active), Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers) and Paul Fielding and Malcolm Smith (St Ives CC). The final lap saw several splits in the leading group with Coleman making an early break. He could not be caught and reached the chequered flag over a minute up on the remaining six chasers.
