Category 6 ride led by Daniel Horn
It was a hot sunny day surprisingly, and the start point of Much Hadham gave me confidence that it would only be a small group, expecting about 5 souls. We actually started up with 9 souls and 8 bikes.
Off we trundled. Unbeknown to me we had a TT world champion riding with us, so we were in good company!
A gentle pace as is the cat 6 staple, we eventually arrived precisely on time at the farm shop/café near Saffron Walden – good food and beer was consumed by all, and we set off with a cunning diversion Peter has proposed and I stupidly agreed with.
The diversion was a simple cut through to avoid 20m of main road. However, during the diversion we ascended a climb to a rail crossing with barriers down; tumbleweed, webs and a sign ‘closed for the summer’ is what it felt like. We waited and waited, the sun was setting, owls hooting, bats flying around until eventually the barriers lifted and we made our way back ascending a few more little hills, and eventually arriving at my favourite watering hole I like to call home. At this point I said farewell to the group as they were all trundling back to the smoke.
A lovely ride and great company – thank you those brave souls who endured one of my favourite routes.
See y'all when I’m back for London to Brighton training program.
