Category 6 ride led by Lisa Ridoutt
I thought it was about time I stepped up and lead my first Cat 6 club run.
Having studied a few of the previous leaders in action, I knew what was required of me.
I had to find the quietest of lanes (Mike), I had to continuously float effortlessly from the back to the front of the ride (Danny), whilst chatting and laughing as I climbed every steep hill (Tony DS).
We met in Hertford, as I looked around, I was comforted by the fact that I had at least six 'experienced Wheelers' within the pack of twelve. We were joined by three cyclists on their first club run and two new members.
We headed out towards Bramfield, within less than five miles of starting out there was a crash and two of the team hit the tarmac, having cycled into each other??!! My heart sank as I realised that three of the ‘experienced Wheelers’ were involved and had been watched by the five newer recruits who must have been wondering what professional set up they had joined!!
Unfortunately the ‘Elite Wheelers’ continued to let me down further into the ride with one having an altercation with a car driver and then having a very narrow escape as he pulled out at a junction into an oncoming car.
We arrived at Mill End Plants for the usual cakes and coffee. I had by then disowned the ‘Elite Wheelers” and planned to just focus on the newer members of the club who were far less bother than the ‘others’! We met a further Wheeler whilst on the coffee stop who joined us on the return journey, making us a group of 13, unlucky for some (me).
A much less eventful return journey, a few new lanes and a thoroughly enjoyable ride.
Welcome to Grace, Matt and Shaun on their first run out with us, it’s not always like this, honest, sometimes we are even quite professional.
